オイルや粒子状物質の追加ろ過、0.01μmのろ過レベルを通過する気流により、プレフィルターは乾燥剤がほこりやオイルで汚染されるのを防ぎます（これは乾燥剤の寿命を大幅に縮めます）。
圧縮空気ドライヤーは、乾燥剤を充填した複数組のフィルターカートリッジで構成されています。ミスト状の圧縮空気は複数組のフィルターエレメントを交互に流れ、空気中の水分はドライヤーの表面に蓄積されます。ろ過プロセスが所定の時間に達すると、気流は他のフィルターエレメントに切り替わり、気流の一部（排出気流）は最初のフィルターエレメントのドライヤーを再生するために使用される。フラッシング気流は大気中に放出される。乾燥剤の耐用年数は約15000時間です。
